Written by a team of experts, this Companion discusses Cage’s background, his work, and its performance and reception, providing in sum a fully rounded portrait of a fascinating figure. Besides composing around 300 works, he was also a prolific performer, writer, poet, and visual artist. This book celebrates the richness and diversity of Cage’s achievements – the development of the prepared piano and of the percussion orchestra, the adoption of chance and of indeterminacy, the employment of electronic resources and of graphic notation, and the questioning of the most fundamental tenets of western art music. Pupil of Schoenberg, Henry Cowell, Marcel Duchamp, and Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki among others, he spent much of his career in pursuit of an unusual goal: “giving up control so that sounds can be sounds,” as he put it. 2/1/2024 0 Comments Lume wipesOf course my body has its own natural biological smells, body odor. I’ve “pitted out” many a shirt, dress, and jacket over the years because of it, but the creases of my inner thighs are particularly productive this time of year. My stress and activity levels, naturally, have an impact. Given I’m a plus size woman with anxiety, and it’s the middle of summer, sweat is an ongoing thing. Onto the cream - this was the product I was most anticipating. I did NOT use it on my body except to sample the smell on the back of my wrist, just like you might do with a perfume in the store. It didn’t really smell like that, I told myself, and I vowed to smell it again another day. I put the lid back on and chalked it up to my mind playing tricks on me. But the sour soon gave way to a more familiar smell, a sour milk smell that immediately took my mind back to the wine bar and that damn Trappist cheese. When I opened the deodorant, it smelled overly sour, more than I would expect from a lime scent. I love them and may purchase them in the future, but I’m equally happy to stay the course with my usual body wipes. Not at all unpleasant, cool and clean, just not what I imagined. While the scent promised cool cotton, I found it smelled more like the cucumber melon days of the early 2000s. I was so excited to smell them! The first item I opened were the wipes. The price made me a bit anxious, only because I’m accustomed to buying deodorant and body care products from the drug store or grocery store. The items arrived in a timely manner, about two weeks from the time I placed the order, so that was a positive start. It’s summertime and my mom mentioned it in conversation a while back, so I decided to try it and share the results with her before both of us made the investment.Ĭontext: I placed an order for Lumē and got three products - their stick deodorant (lime scent), their topical cream (unscented), and their body wipes (cool cotton scent). But recently, after a couple years of hearing about it, I decided to try a product that promised odor control for all body parts. Because of that, it’s not often I find myself swayed by advertisements, especially commercials. As a former marketing professional, I am intimately familiar with tactics and practices to influence consumer behavior. I’ve never really been big into brands or trends. It was a new, young cheese, and if I close my eyes right now I can still smell it on the doctor’s breath as he ordered another glass of Chardonnay. Enough of my friends are moms that I’ve encountered that smell before. To me, it tasted like curdled baby formula smells. This particular cheese came from the Abbey of Gethsemani in Trappist, Kentucky, a monastery for Roman Catholic monks who produce a handful of value-added products to this day, though they no longer sell the cheese. Nearly without exception, he and his wife would request a double order of this specific cheese. Four servings with crackers, artisan breads, and fruit. They loved oaky Chardonnay and almost always got at least one large cheese plate. Most of the time he’d come in with his wife, a gorgeous septuagenarian with a thick French accent. He has since passed away, but I’ll always regard him as a bit of a surrogate grandfather. One of my all-time favorite customers was a doctor and leader in the local health sector. My sense of smell isn’t as keen as some, but it is so hard-wired to my memory that some smells will cause actual flashbacks, near out-of-body experiences where, in a matter of seconds, I’m mentally transported back to a distinct moment in time, an environment or singular event, and it evokes a physical response similar to PTSD. The one cheese I couldn’t stomach was from a monastery outside Bardstown.Įvery time a customer ordered it I cringed. The darkest crystalline blues from Denmark and all degrees of funk in between. Truth be told, however, I’ve only ever encountered one cheese I didn’t like, and I’ve sampled the likes of Limburger without flinching. I’m what’s called a turophile - a cheese lover from way back. That included assembling sandwiches, salmon plates, and cheese trays. My job was customer service when we had customers and often I defaulted to kitchen witch and inventory manager when duty called. In addition to selling wines from all over the world, we had the largest selection of small batch bourbons around. In my early 20s I worked at a wine and spirits market that sold a wide variety of goods from local farmers and producers throughout Kentucky. TL/DR: it’s a no-go for me, but it may work for you if you can get past the smell of the product 2/1/2024 0 Comments La moca museumThere are lines of people every day waiting outside the Broad across the street and at the new. You can also back up at any time using the Time Machine item in the Mac’s menu bar. Setting Up Only Manual Backupsīy default, Time Machine backs up using the schedule Apple baked into it or the one you specify with a solution like iTimeMachine. If you’re comfortable working with the Mac OS X command line, you can also use these instructions and scripts to manually set up a network share as a backup location. iTimeMachine is a utility that you can use to accomplish this feat. There are a couple of options if you don’t have a Time Capsule but still want to back up to a network location (such as another computer, a home or small office network attached storage device, or a non-Apple server in your office). Backing Up to a Network File Share Other Than a Time Capsule It can also help you stagger backups in your home or office so that all Macs sharing a Time Capsule or other network location at the same time (bogging down bandwidth and slowing everyone’s backups). This can be helpful if you want to avoid taxing your system, network, or external hard drive during certain hours. TimeMachineEditor offers you the ability to adjust when Time Machine backs up your data. Some of these Time Machine enhancements can be easily achieved using Apple's Time Machine interface others are fully developed add-on tools that adjust Time Machine operation through a simple utility, and a few require using tools built into Mac OS X or downloaded to adjust Time Machine by altering configuration details (if you're uncomfortable altering configurations as described, stick to the simpler options). If you're generally happy with the ease of use that Time Machine offers but there are a few things you wish you could change, these tools and tips may be for you. It’s almost entirely eliminated the sounds I hear from my server, and made my workspace a better place. Or maybe you just don’t need a backup every hour, and prefer Time Machine to run every two hours, or 90 minutes, or 10 hours.Īpple hasn’t seen fit to give you those choices when you turn on Time Machine, but TimeMachineEditor gives you that level of control. TimeMachineEditor is pretty flexible, especially the Calendar Intervals feature, which will let you schedule backups exactly when you want them. Just as these two Macs are different and require different settings, your particular setup may have some very specific attributes. As for my iMac, I’ve set it to back up “when inactive”, which generally has the effect of my Time Machine backup happening when I’m eating lunch or running an errand-and otherwise not around to hear the churning of my backup disk. Instead, I’ve set it to back up late in the evening when I’m done for the day. My server’s boot drive doesn’t have a lot of important data on it, and it certainly doesn’t need to backing itself up hourly. There’s also an override to block out time when backups should never be done. It’s a very simple tool, with three modes of operation: back up when inactive, back up on a regular timed interval, or back up at various times you define. The solution I use to solve this problem is the free TimeMachineEditor by tclementdev (donation requested), which turns off Time Machine’s automatic scheduling and instead provides its own scheduling system that kicks off a normal Time Machine backup when appropriate. The result: Lots of clicking from the RAID, which is really distracting. By default, Time Machine tries to back up every hour, which leads to two backups happening in my office every hour. My server backs itself up to the RAID via Time Machine (in addition to a network backup), and my iMac Pro also backs up to the RAID via Time Machine. My RAID isn’t particularly loud, but there are still five drives in there and they do make an audible noise when they’re working. But those drives are the only classic spinning-disc hard drives left in my house at this point, and I’ve gotten accustomed to the silence of flash storage. I love the RAID array I have attached to my Mac mini server, with 16TB of data spread redundantly across five physical drives. Mars has seasons, like the Earth, and polar caps composed of carbon dioxide ice and water ice. Orbiting spacecraft and rovers have provided considerable evidence there was once water flowing on the surface of Mars water may even exist today, frozen as permafrost beneath the surface. Most of Mars’ atmosphere was either oxidised into its iron rich surface (forming the rusty red colour we see today) or lost to space over time due to Mars’ weak gravity. Mars may once have been Earth-like, but has now lost its surface water and possesses only a very thin carbon dioxide atmosphere and a surface pressure less than one per cent that of Earth.
